What Are Cannabis Edibles?
Edibles are cannabis-infused foods and beverages made with cannabinoids like THC, the compound responsible for the euphoric “high”, and CBD, known for its therapeutic effects without the intoxication. Some products may also include other cannabinoids such as CBG, CBN, or THCV, which offer their own unique benefits.
Because cannabinoids bind better with fats than water, edibles are typically made using infusions like cannabutter or cannabis oils. These can be incorporated into baked goods like brownies, cookies, and even dressings or beverages. You’ll also find tinctures (infused alcohol drops), and gummies as among the most popular edible formats.
Edibles are known for their strong effects, largely due to how the body processes THC. When ingested, the liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is more potent and longer-lasting than smoked or vaped cannabis. That’s why it's crucial to consume responsibly. At Ashario Cannabis, we always recommend, “Start low and go slow.” Begin with a small dose and give your body time to feel the effects before taking more.
How Do Edibles Work?
Unlike smoking or vaping cannabis, which delivers cannabinoids directly to the bloodstream via the lungs, edibles must pass through the digestive system and be processed by the liver. This slower journey means that edibles take longer to kick in, often 30 minutes to 2 hours, but their effects are stronger and last longer.
Because THC is fat-soluble, it needs to be bonded with a fat to be absorbed by your body. Infusions like oils or butters are key to making effective edibles. Before infusion, cannabis undergoes a process called decarboxylation, usually by heating it in an oven, to activate its psychoactive and medicinal compounds.
How Long Do Edibles Last?
Don’t expect immediate effects from that cannabis cookie or gummy. Most people feel the peak effects of edibles between 1 to 2 hours after consumption, with the high potentially lasting 2 to 3 hours, or longer. This is much slower and longer-lasting than smoking, which typically peaks within 10 minutes and fades within an hour.
Interestingly, despite the stronger effects, only about 10 to 20% of the THC from edibles enters the bloodstream, compared to 50 to 60% from inhalation. This is why even seasoned cannabis users can feel the power of a low-dose edible. Tolerance to smoking doesn't always translate to tolerance to edibles.
Should You Choose Edibles Over Flower?
Edibles are a great alternative for those who prefer not to inhale cannabis. They’re ideal for users, both medical and recreational, who are looking for a longer-lasting experience without the need for smoking, vaping, or dabbing.
With no exposure to combustion or vapour, edibles are a cleaner option. They’re also great for individuals managing chronic conditions like pain, inflammation, or nausea. Many consumers turn to edibles for sleep support, as they tend to help users remain asleep for extended periods.

Understanding Edible Dosing
All edible products sold at Ashario Cannabis are clearly labelled with accurate THC and cannabinoid content, allowing you to manage your dose with confidence. In line with Canadian regulations, recreational edibles are limited to 10mg THC per package. This controlled dosing ensures a predictable, repeatable experience, especially compared to smoking or vaping.
We carry a broad selection of properly dosed options, from low-dose microdosing edibles to full-strength products designed for seasoned users. Tinctures are also available and can be considered a form of edible, even though they don’t contain traditional food ingredients.
Most Popular Edible Types
Gummies are by far the most popular edible at Ashario Cannabis, and for good reason. They’re tasty, easy to dose, and come in a wide range of cannabinoid blends and flavours. Chocolate bars and baked goods are also staples, while cannabis drinks continue to rise in popularity thanks to new infusion techniques and great flavours.
Do Edibles Taste Like Cannabis?
Modern edible makers have significantly reduced the weedy taste that was once common in infused products. While some baked items might carry a mild cannabis note due to the use of infused butter, flavours are typically well masked. Gummies and chocolates do a particularly good job at covering up any skunky undertones.
Why Many Prefer Edibles
- Discreet & smoke-free: Edibles offer a convenient, odourless experience, no smoke, no gear, and no need to step outside.
- Long-lasting relief: Edibles are often used by medical patients for sustained symptom control, including chronic pain and inflammation.
- Relaxation & anxiety relief: Many consumers report that edibles help them unwind and manage stress more effectively.
Edibles for Pain Management
Edibles have emerged as a strong choice for people managing ongoing pain conditions. Studies support what many users have known for generations: cannabis can ease persistent pain, especially when THC is combined with CBD. This pairing appears to offer a more balanced and effective result by activating a broader spectrum of receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system.
Edibles for Anxiety
Low-dose, CBD-rich edibles are a great way to manage mild to moderate anxiety without overwhelming the senses. For anxiety relief, we generally advise against high-THC or sativa-dominant products. Instead, choose calming blends with a good amount of CBD and calming cannabinoids like CBN for best results.
Edibles for Sleep
Sleep-friendly edibles are among the fastest-growing categories in cannabis. These products are often made with indica-leaning strains or are blended with melatonin or other sleep-promoting compounds. CBN has also gained popularity in sleep aids due to its sedative effects, making it a popular ingredient in nighttime gummies and chocolates.
