Do You Need ID for Weed Delivery in Ontario?
Note: Cannabis is for adults 19+ in Ontario. This content is for informational purposes only and is not medical advice. Consult a healthcare professional for cannabis-related health questions.
Yes, you need valid, government-issued photo ID for every cannabis delivery in Ontario, and you must be 19 or older. At Ashario, our driver checks your ID in person at the door, hands the order directly to you, and cannot leave it unattended. No ID, no delivery. This is the law, not store policy.
That trips up more first-time delivery customers than anything else. People assume that because they ordered online and paid online, the ID part is done. It isn't. The check happens at the door, every single time, and there are no exceptions. Below we walk through exactly what happens when the driver arrives, which IDs count, and the small mistakes that get an order refused. For the mechanics of ordering itself, our guide on how same-day cannabis delivery works covers the ordering flow.
Why is ID required for cannabis delivery in Ontario?
ID is required because Ontario's Cannabis Control Act and the federal Cannabis Act make it illegal to give cannabis to anyone under 19. A licensed retailer that delivers is legally responsible for verifying age at the moment of handoff: the same standard as a purchase across a store counter. Skipping the check would put the retailer's licence at risk.
The rule mirrors alcohol delivery. A licensed cannabis retailer isn't just selling a product; it's the last checkpoint before cannabis reaches a person's hands. The AGCO, Ontario's retail regulator, holds retailers accountable for that verification, and Health Canada frames age control as a core reason legal cannabis exists: keeping product out of the hands of minors.
Our budtenders get asked constantly whether the online age-gate "counts." It doesn't. Clicking a box that says you're 19+ when you order is a first filter, not proof. The in-person ID check at the door is the legal step that actually matters. As of 2026, no Ontario retailer can waive it.
What ID is accepted for weed delivery at the door?
Any valid, government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth is accepted for cannabis delivery in Ontario. The most common are an Ontario driver's licence, a provincial photo card, a Canadian passport, or a Canadian permanent resident card. The ID must be unexpired and the photo must clearly match your face.
Here's what our drivers look for:
- Ontario driver's licence: the most common ID we see at the door.
- Ontario Photo Card: issued to people who don't drive; fully valid.
- Canadian or foreign passport: accepted as long as it's current.
- Permanent resident card: accepted.
- Certificate of Indian Status (Secure Status Card): accepted.
What doesn't work: a photo of your ID on your phone, an expired licence, a health card (Ontario health cards aren't valid age ID for cannabis), a student card, or an ID that clearly belongs to someone else. If the name or photo doesn't line up, the driver has to refuse the handoff.
What actually happens when the driver arrives?
When your Ashario driver arrives, they'll confirm your name, ask to see your physical photo ID, verify you're 19+, and hand the order directly to you. The whole exchange takes under a minute. The driver cannot leave the package on a porch, in a mailbox, with a neighbour, or with anyone under 19. It goes to you, in person, or it doesn't go at all.
Most orders from our delivery-fulfilling stores arrive within 1 to 2 hours during our delivery window of 10 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week. The flat delivery fee is $9.77 with no minimum order. Order by 8 PM to lock in same-day delivery. A quick walkthrough of the door step:
- You get a heads-up as the driver approaches.
- Meet the driver at the door: someone 19+ has to be there to receive it.
- Show your physical, valid photo ID.
- The driver confirms your age and name against the order.
- You take the sealed order in hand. Done.
If you paid online, there's no cash or card fumbling at the door, just the ID check and the handoff. Our budtenders often tell customers to have their ID out before the driver knocks; it makes the exchange smooth, especially in an apartment lobby where you've got a buzzer and a timer working against you.
Can someone else accept my cannabis delivery?
Only if that person is 19+ and shows their own valid photo ID. The order is released to whoever answers the door, not to a specific name, but that person must pass the age check. A driver cannot hand cannabis to a minor even if the order was placed by an adult. If nobody 19+ is home, the delivery can't be completed.
This catches people who order to a home where a younger sibling or a teenager might answer. Plan for an adult to be there. If you're ordering to a workplace or a friend's place, make sure whoever's receiving it knows they'll need to show ID: otherwise the driver leaves with your order.
What happens if I fail the ID check or nobody's home?
If you can't produce valid photo ID, appear intoxicated, or nobody 19+ is available to receive the order, the driver will not complete the delivery. Cannabis retailers in Ontario are required to refuse handoff in these situations. Depending on the circumstances, the order may be returned and re-delivery or refund handled through customer service.
Drivers also have the right to refuse if someone appears visibly impaired at the door: the same responsible-service standard applies to cannabis as to alcohol. It's not personal; it's a licensing obligation. If your delivery couldn't be completed and you think there was a mistake, reach out through our contact page and our team will sort it out.
Where does Ashario deliver, and how do I order?
Ashario runs same-day cannabis delivery from three of its four Ontario stores, covering North York and much of York Region. Delivery hours are 10 AM to 10 PM daily, the fee is a flat $9.77, and most orders land within 1 to 2 hours. You order online through the store menu, then meet the driver with your ID.
Our three delivery hubs cover different zones:
- Same-day weed delivery in North York, Thornhill, Richmond Hill and west Markham: fulfilled by our Centerpoint Mall store at 6464 Yonge St.
- Delivery in Downsview and west North York: including Bathurst Manor, Wilson Heights and north Scarborough, fulfilled by our Finch & Dufferin store.
- Delivery in Aurora, Newmarket and northern York Region: including Oak Ridges and King City, fulfilled by our Aurora store at 15114 Yonge St.
Prefer to shop in person? All four locations are open 7 AM to 11 PM daily. You can browse the live menu for your nearest store or check addresses and phone numbers on our store locations page. Areas outside our delivery zones (like Mississauga, Brampton, or Barrie) are in-store pickup only.
The short version
Have your valid, unexpired photo ID ready, make sure someone 19+ is home to receive the order, and the door step takes under a minute. That's the whole story. The ID check isn't optional and never will be. It's the legal reason licensed delivery exists in the first place. For more on the wider service, our homepage and blog cover ordering, timing, and product categories in depth.

Frequently asked questions
Does the online age-gate replace the ID check at the door?
No. Checking a box that confirms you're 19+ when you place an order is a first-pass filter, not legal proof of age. The physical ID check at the door is the step Ontario law actually requires, and it happens every time regardless of what you clicked online. Both steps exist for different reasons: one filters the order, the other verifies the person receiving it.
Can I show a photo of my ID on my phone for weed delivery?
No. Drivers need to see a physical, government-issued photo ID: a picture of your licence on your phone screen isn't accepted for cannabis delivery in Ontario. The driver has to verify that the ID is genuine, unexpired, and matches the person at the door, which can't be reliably done from a screenshot. Keep your actual card on you when the driver's due to arrive.
Is an Ontario health card valid ID for cannabis delivery?
No. Ontario health cards are not accepted as age verification for cannabis, the same way they're not accepted for alcohol. Use a driver's licence, an Ontario Photo Card, a passport, or a permanent resident card instead. Any valid, government-issued photo ID that clearly shows your date of birth and matches your face will work at the door.
What if I'm clearly over 19: do I still have to show ID?
Yes. The ID requirement applies to everyone, no matter how old you look. Drivers don't have discretion to skip the check based on appearance, because a licensed retailer is legally required to verify age at handoff for every single delivery. Have your ID ready even if you're decades past 19. It keeps the exchange fast and keeps the retailer compliant.
Can a driver leave my cannabis order if I'm not home?
No. Cannabis can't be left unattended on a porch, in a mailbox, or with anyone who can't show valid 19+ ID. The order has to be handed directly to a person who passes the age check. If nobody eligible is home when the driver arrives, the delivery can't be completed, and you'd need to arrange re-delivery or a refund through customer service.
Will the driver refuse delivery if I seem intoxicated?
They can. Ontario's responsible-service rules apply to cannabis delivery, so a driver may decline the handoff if someone at the door appears visibly impaired: the same standard used for alcohol. It's a licensing obligation, not a judgment call about you personally. If your delivery was refused and you believe it was a mistake, contact our team and we'll review the situation.
